Beginning with Lewis and Clark’s 1805 expedition through the mountains and canyons of the southwest Montana to the discovery of gold, silver and copper sixty years later, the Montana story lies in the nearby ghost towns and mining camps, and in the historical landmarks of Helena, Montana.
The name “Canyon Ferry” originated when John Oakes started ferrying miners and prospectors across the Missouri River Canyon in 1865. In the early 1950's the Canyon Ferry Dam was built, creating the 27-mile-long Canyon Ferry Lake. The lake covers a total of 35,000 acres and is 160 feet deep in the north end.
Surrounded by more than one million acres of national forest and public land, Canyon Ferry Crossing is a year-round recreational community. Canyon Ferry Lake and surrounding rivers and creeks are renowned for great fishing for rainbow trout, perch, ling, and walleye. Canyon Ferry Lake is an excellent lake for fishing for rainbow trout. The lake is heavily stocked each year, and the large size of the lake along with its fertility allows the rainbows to grow large quickly. Concrete boat ramps, campgrounds, day-use areas, shelters, swimming, and three marinas are available for recreational use. There’s boating, sailing, swimming, water-skiing, wind surfing and canoeing, or exploring the three major rivers which forms the lake. The surrounding public lands provide opportunities for back country excursions, hiking, biking, hunting and seasonal camping. In winter, there’s downhill and cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and ice sailing.
Canyon Ferry is the most popular lake in the state for water skiing and sailing. Nestled between Canyon Ferry Lake and the Helena National Forest, Canyon Ferry Crossing possesses all the natural beauty and recreational opportunities the Big Sky has to offer. The lake and mountain views are spectacular, the air is clean and fresh and the environment is as peaceful and the scenery is extraordinary.
The wildlife viewing in the Canyon Ferry Reservoir area is quite impressive. The area is one of the best in the country for viewing large concentrations of bald eagles. A wildlife management area at the end of the reservoir is managed by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks and is home to a colony of terns and pelicans. Barrow´s Goldeneyes find their home along the Missouri River in the winter. Around the upland areas the reservoir provides habitat for Chestnut-collared Longspurs and Longbilled Curlews, as well as hundreds of Pronghorn antelope.
